PriceFrom $2.52

The Yokosuka MXY-7 Model 11 Ohka was a rocket-powered kamikaze aircraft primarily used against U.S. Navy ships during the Battle of Okinawa (April–June 1945). Carried by Mitsubishi G4M2e "Betty" bombers, these "baka bombs" targeted Allied vessels, including the USS West Virginia and USS Mannert L. Abele

Key details on its use:

  • Target Area: Specifically deployed in the Pacific Theater, attacking ships operating around Okinawa.
  • Debut & Limitations: The combat debut occurred on March 21, 1945, but was disastrous, with many "Bettys" destroyed by US Navy fighters before launching their missiles.
  • Effectiveness: While intended for capital ships, they mostly damaged or sank smaller destroyers and transport ships, often failing due to the vulnerability of their parent carriers.
  • Operational Method: Released from a bomber at a range of 37 km (23 miles) to glide, then igniting rockets for a high-speed dive.
  • Later Plans: Development included plans to launch variants from land-based caves/catapults to defend the Japanese home islands.

Despite 755 Model 11 units being produced for the campaign, their overall impact was limited by Allied defense tactics.
