PriceFrom $2.52

The Yokosuka E14Y1, known by the Allied reporting name "Glen," was a specialized Japanese Imperial Navy floatplane designed for reconnaissance, operated from submarines (specifically B1-class) from 1941 to 1943. It is famous for being the only aircraft to bomb the continental United States during WWII,, conducting a, incendiary raid on Oregon in September 1942.

Key Details and Usage

  • Submarine Operations: The E14Y was carried in a small, watertight hangar on the deck of long-range submarines (e.g., I-25I-19I-10).
  • Assembly: It was designed to be quickly assembled (in under 30 minutes) and launched via a catapult.
  • Reconnaissance Roles: Used for scouting missions over Pearl Harbor (Dec 1941), Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and the Aleutians.
  • The Oregon Bombing: On September 9, 1942, pilot Nobuo Fujita launched from I-25 to drop incendiary bombs on Oregon forests.
  • Performance: A slow, two-seat monoplane, it was vulnerable to Allied fighters, often conducting missions at night.
  • Production: 126 units were built by Watanabe Iron Works.
  •

The E14Y served as a critical, albeit limited, tool for long-range reconnaissance early in the Pacific War.
