Yokosuka D4y1 “Suisei”

PriceFrom $2.52

The Yokosuka D4Y1 "Suisei" (Allied codename "Judy") was primarily operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy as a carrier-based fast reconnaissance aircraft and later a dive bomber from 1942 to 1945. It debuted at the Battle of Midway (1942) and was heavily used in the battles of the Solomon Islands, Philippine Sea, Marianas, and in kamikaze attacks.

Key deployment areas and roles for the D4Y1 include:

  • Battle of Midway (1942): Operated as the D4Y1-C reconnaissance version, where two prototypes were used for reconnaissance from the carrier Sōryū.
  • Guadalcanal Campaign (1942–1943): Used for fast reconnaissance due to its high speed.
  • Battle of the Philippine Sea/Marianas (1944): Employed in large numbers as a dive bomber by Kokutai 121 and the 652nd Kōkūtai, suffering heavy losses.
  • Kamikaze Missions (1944–1945): Used in suicide attacks against Allied ships, including in the Battle of Okinawa.
  • General Service: Operated from carriers HiryūJun'yō, and others, as well as land bases, primarily in the Pacific theater.

Although designed as a bomber, early D4Y1 models were limited by structural weaknesses in high-speed dives, leading to their initial use as reconnaissance planes before later models became effective dive bombers.
