The Waco CG-4A Hadrian was the most widely used Allied troop and cargo glider of World War II, deployed in major airborne operations across Europe and the Pacific from 1943 to 1945. Key operations included the invasions of Sicily (Operation Husky) and Normandy (D-Day), as well as Arnhem (Market Garden), southern France (Dragoon), and the Rhine crossings.

Major Combat Operations:

  • Sicily (July 1943): First major operational use during Operation Husky.
  • Normandy (June 1944): Extensive use during the D-Day assault.
  • Burma (March 1944): Used in Operation Thursday by the Chindits.
  • Southern France (August 1944): Operation Dragoon.
  • Netherlands (September 1944): Operation Market Garden.
  • Germany (March 1945): Operation Varsity, the crossing of the Rhine.

Operational Use Details:

  • Purpose: The CG-4A transported 13 troops, a jeep, or a 75mm howitzer, usually towed behind a C-47 Skytrain.
  • Tactics: Gliders were considered expendable and designed for one-time, silent, and often dangerous landings in enemy territory.
  • Arctic Use: Following WWII, the CG-4A was modified with skis for experimental arctic, cold-weather research in the early 1950s.

Over 12,000 to 13,900 units were produced by 15 different companies in the United States.
