The Vought SB2U Vindicator was a carrier-based dive bomber used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps (1937–1943), most notably at the Battle of Midway in 1942. It served on carriers like the USS SaratogaLexingtonRanger, and Wasp, and was also operated by France and Britain. It was primarily used for patrols, training, and combat, with the Marines calling them "Wind Indicators".

Key Usage and Deployment:

  • Battle of Midway (June 1942): VMSB-241 operated 12 Vindicators from Midway Island, where they suffered heavy losses.
  • Neutrality Patrols: Used in the Atlantic for patrols between 1939 and December 1941.
  • International Service:
    • France: The V-156F variant was used by the French Navy in 1940, including action in the Battle of France and the evacuation of Dunkirk.
    • Britain: Exported as the Chesapeake Mk. I to the British Fleet Air Arm.
