The Vought OS2U Kingfisher was the primary ship-based observation aircraft for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during World War II, primarily used in the Pacific Theater for spotting gunfire, scouting, and air-sea rescues. It operated from catapults on battleships and cruisers in both the Atlantic and Pacific, including the Aleutian Islands campaign.

Key details regarding its use include:

  • Primary Roles: Scouting, observation, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and rescuing downed pilots.
  • Deployment: Used extensively on U.S. battleships and cruisers to direct shore bombardment during Pacific island-hopping campaigns.
  • Rescue Missions: Famous for saving numerous airmen, including Eddie Rickenbacker.
  • Global Usage: Supplied to the British Royal Navy (as the Kingfisher I), Soviet Navy, Royal Australian Air Force, and various South American nations.
  • Operational Bases: Naval Air Station Pensacola was a primary base, alongside other coastal air stations.

The Kingfisher was noted for its ability to operate from, and be recovered by ships.
