The Vought F4U Corsair was primarily used by the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II, debuting in 1943 at Guadalcanal. It excelled in combat from land bases and, later, carriers, providing close air support during the island-hopping campaign and fighting against Japanese aircraft.

Key areas and operations include:

  • Pacific Theater (WWII): Used extensively for ground attack and air superiority by the U.S. Marines and Navy.
  • Guadalcanal & Solomons: Initial combat deployment for the Marine Corps.
  • Okinawa: Defended against Japanese kamikaze attacks.
  • European Theater: Used by the British Royal Fleet Air Arm, notably in operations against the battleship Tirpitz.
  • Korean War: Served as a primary fighter-bomber for U.S. forces.
  • International Service: Operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force and later by the French Navy in Indochina and Algeria.

The aircraft was famously nicknamed "Whistling Death" by Japanese forces.
