The Vickers Wellington Mk. IA was a primary medium bomber for the RAF's Bomber Command in the early stages of World War II, used for daylight, night raids, and specialized mine-laying in Europe. Produced in 1939-1940, it saw action over Germany and occupied territories. It was used by 149 and 37 Squadrons.

  • Key Operations: Served in the first daylight bombing raids on Germany in late 1939 and 1940, including the Heligoland Bight raid on December 18, 1939.
  • Operational Areas: Primarily Western Europe and Germany.
  • Role: Primarily as a bomber, it was designed for a 3-man crew in the nose, a 2-man crew in the tail, and a wireless operator.
  • Distinguishing Features: The Mk. IA featured modified turrets (Nash & Thomson FN5 in the nose and FN9 in the tail) compared to the Mark I.

It was considered the most capable medium bomber in service at the outbreak of the war, known for its strong, geodetic, fabric-covered construction.
