The Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) Sa'ar (a modified Dassault Super Mystère B2) was primarily used by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) in the late 1960s and early 1970s, serving as a fighter-bomber during the Six-Day War (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973). Later, these aircraft were sold to the Honduran Air Force and used for border security in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Key Details of Usage:
- Israel (IAF): Acquired 24 Super Mystères in 1958, which were upgraded with J52 engines and rebranded as "Sa'ar" (or Sambad). They were heavily involved in the Six-Day War and provided critical ground support, including the unfortunate attacks on the USS Liberty.
- Honduras: In 1976–1979, Israel sold 16 (or 12 initially, then more) of these aircraft to Honduras, where they served in border skirmishes with Nicaragua until 1996.
- Role: The aircraft served as a ground-attack fighter, capable of carrying bombs, rockets, and the Shafrir 2 air-to-air missile.
