The Israeli Air Force (IAF) operated a fleet of Sud-Ouest S.O. 4050 Vautour aircraft between 1958 and 1972. Acquired primarily to replace the de Havilland Mosquito and counter Soviet-supplied Ilyushin Il-28 bombers, the Vautour served as a long-range bomber, attack plane, and all-weather interceptor during its service life.
History and Combat Service
- Acquisition: Israel purchased 31 Vautour aircraft from France, which saw active service from May 1958 to April 1972.Variants: The IAF operated three variants: the Vautour IIA (single-seat long-range attack and bomber), Vautour IIB (two-seat bomber with a glazed nose), and Vautour IIN (two-seat radar-equipped all-weather interceptor).
- Operational Use: Vautours were flown by the IAF's 110 Squadron and 119 Squadron. They flew aerial reconnaissance and ground-attack sorties during the Six-Day War and the subsequent War of Attrition.
- Retirement: The Vautours were eventually replaced by more advanced, supersonic aircraft like the A-4 Skyhawk and the F-4E Phantom II.
