The Sukhoi Su-7B (NATO reporting name "Fitter-A") was primarily used as a ground-attack fighter-bomber by the Soviet Union and exported to several allied nations, seeing significant combat in the Middle East and South Asia. It was used by Egypt and Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and 1973 Yom Kippur War, and by India during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
Key Locations and Users:
- Soviet Union: Over 30 units of the USSR Air Force were equipped with various Su-7B variants, beginning in 1960, although the type never saw direct combat in Soviet service.
- Egypt & Syria: Operated Su-7BMK variants during the Six-Day War, War of Attrition, and Yom Kippur War to attack Israeli ground forces.
- India: The Indian Air Force used Su-7s extensively in the 1971 war, flying nearly 1,500 offensive sorties.
- Warsaw Pact/Other Nations: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Iraq, North Korea, Algeria, and Afghanistan also operated the aircraft.
Operational Context:
The Su-7B was designed as a low-level supersonic fighter-bomber but was often found to be inefficient in this role due to its high speed, limited loiter time, and poor visibility, making it less effective than intended in close air support. It was known for high, often dangerous, operational accident rates, particularly in Soviet service.
