The Sukhoi Su-17M2 "Fitter-D" was primarily used by the Soviet Air Force in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a specialized ground-attack and tactical reconnaissance aircraft, notably serving with the 168th Guard Fighter Bomber Air Regiment in the Transcaucasian region. It was deployed along the Soviet-Iranian border in 1979-1980 for border protection during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Key Usage Details of the Su-17M2 (Fitter-D):
- Soviet Union (VVS): Operated by the 168th Guard Fighter Bomber Air Regiment (transferred from factory in 1977).
- Deployment Region: A squadron was deployed to Kzyl-Arvat airport near the Iranian border between December 1979 and March 1980.
- Role: The Su-17M2 was considered a modern, precision-weapon-capable platform, often in a nuclear-capable role.
- Transition: It was only used for a short time before many units were replaced or upgraded to the Su-17M3.
- International: While many Su-17/22 variants were widely exported (Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc.), the specific M2 "Fitter-D" was mostly known in Soviet service, transitioning to the Fitter-H/K for export variants.
The Su-17M2 was a critical, albeit transitional, model that paved the way for more advanced swing-wing Su-17 variants in the Soviet inventory.
