The Sukhoi Su-15 "Flagon A" was used exclusively by the Soviet Anti-Air Defence Force (V-PVO) as a supersonic interceptor from the late 1960s to the 1990s, primarily stationed at bases in the Soviet Far East, Murmansk, and Georgia to counter NATO bombers. It gained notoriety for intercepting foreign, often civilian, aircraft that entered Soviet airspace.
Key Locations and Incidents:
- Far East/Sakhalin Island: Su-15s were based here to monitor airspace near Japan and Alaska. A Su-15TM (later variant) shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in 1983 near Moneron Island.
- Murmansk: In 1978, a Su-15 intercepted and damaged Korean Air Lines Flight 902, forcing it to land on a frozen lake.
- Georgia/Caucasus: In 1981, a Soviet Su-15 based in this region collided with a Argentine Canadair CL-44 transport plane that had strayed into Soviet airspace.
- Border Patrols: They were heavily deployed along the Soviet southern border (e.g., near Turkey and Iran) to intercept potential threats like F-100 Super Sabres.
The Su-15 was never exported and was strictly a defensive, Cold War-era interceptor designed to operate under ground-controlled interception (GCI).
