The Short Stirling, the Royal Air Force's first four-engined bomber, was primarily used for heavy night bombing raids over Germany and occupied Europe from 1941 to 1943, with key missions including targeting oil facilities in Rotterdam. Due to operational limitations, it was later used for mine-laying ("gardening"), electronic countermeasures, special agent drops, and as a troop transport/glider tug in 1944–1945, including D-Day and Market Garden.
