The Saab AJ-37 Viggen was used exclusively by the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet). It never saw active service or operational deployment with any other nation
Operational History
- Primary Operator: The Swedish Air Force was the sole operator of the aircraft.
- Timeline: The AJ-37 variant entered active duty in 1971 and served through the Cold War until the entire Viggen fleet was phased out, with the final variants retiring in 2005. It was ultimately replaced by the Saab JAS 39 Gripen.
- Role: The AJ-37 was the specialized ground-attack and anti-ship variant of the Viggen family. It was primarily deployed to defend Sweden's coastlines and borders against potential Soviet threats.
Where It Was Stationed
- Dispersed Bases: Rather than just operating from standard military airfields, the AJ-37 was heavily deployed via Sweden's unique Bas 60 and Bas 90 highway air base systems.
- Improvised Runways: It was built with short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities, allowing Swedish pilots to operate and hide the aircraft on reinforced public highway strips and out of underground mountain hangars.
Export Attempts
Saab attempted to market the Viggen internationally to countries like India, Australia, Austria, and several NATO nations (including Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway). However, these export bids failed due to strict Swedish neutrality laws, high costs, and a United States political block on the aircraft's Volvo RM8 engine, which utilized American technological components.
