The P-47C Thunderbolt was primarily used by the USAAF in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) starting in April 1943 for high-altitude bomber escort and ground-attack missions. It operated from England to escort bombers over Germany, and saw service in Italy, as well as being used in the Pacific theater, including Burma.
Key details on the usage of the P-47C:
- Combat Debut: The 4th, 56th, and 78th Fighter Groups in England began flying operational combat missions with the P-47C in April 1943.
- Role: Initially, it served as a high-altitude escort for B-17 and B-24 bombers due to its turbocharger, but quickly became effective as a low-level fighter-bomber (dive-bomber) against ground targets.
- Performance: It could out-dive any Luftwaffe aircraft, though early models (C-2) suffered from radio and ignition issues that were later corrected.
- Modifications: The P-47C introduced a longer fuselage, improved engine, and the ability to carry external fuel tanks to increase range for escort missions.
- International Use: The British Royal Air Force (RAF) received P-47C/Thunderbolt Mark I units, which were used in the South East Asia Command.
