The P-47N Thunderbolt, the final production variant of the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, was specifically designed for long-range escort missions in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Developed to protect B-29 Superfortresses, it operated from bases on Ie Shima and Okinawa starting in early 1945, attacking targets in Japan, Korea, and China.

Key details about the P-47N usage:

  • Pacific Theater Operations: P-47N aircraft were deployed in the final months of the war (beginning July 1, 1945) by units like the 507th, 413th, and 414th Fighter Groups, flying missions from Ie Shima to Japan.
  • Long-Range Capability: Featuring increased fuel capacity in wings and a redesigned wing structure, the N model was capable of flying 1,700-mile escort missions.
  • Primary Roles: It was used for long-range bomber escort, ground-attack, and sweeping for Japanese airfields, shipping, and industrial targets.
  • Post-War Use: Following World War II, P-47N aircraft served with the Georgia Air National Guard.

While other Thunderbolt variants (P-47D) saw extensive use in both Europe and the Pacific, the P-47N was almost exclusively utilized in the Pacific due to its specialized long-range requirements.
