The P-61 Black Widow was primarily used as a dedicated night fighter by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during the final year of World War II (1944–1945). It operated across the Pacific, European, Mediterranean, and China-Burma-India (CBI) theaters, serving in roles like nocturnal interception, intruder ground-attack, and reconnaissance.
Key Theaters and Operations:
- Pacific Theater: Operated extensively in the Philippines, New Guinea, Saipan, Ie Shima, and Okinawa, primarily for intercepting Japanese night bombers and kamikaze raiders. It also served as a "lone wolf" to attack ground targets and supply convoys.
- European Theater: Used by the 422nd and 425th Night Fighter Squadrons for patrolling, engaging German aircraft (like Ju 88s), and attacking ground targets, including during the Battle of the Bulge.
- Mediterranean & CBI Theaters: Deployed for nocturnal defense and interception.
Other Uses:
- Post-War: Redesignated as the F-61, it served as a long-range, all-weather interceptor for the Air Defense Command until roughly 1950.
- Research: Used by NACA for high-altitude weather research (Project THUNDERSTORM).
- Navy Training: A small number were operated by the U.S. Marine Corps as F2T-1 trainers.
The P-61 was known for its radar technology and potent 20mm cannon armament.
