The North American P-51B/C Mustang, introduced in late 1943, was primarily used as a long-range bomber escort in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) by the USAAF's Eighth and Ninth Air Forces to dominate skies over Germany. It also served extensively in the Mediterranean, Italian, and Pacific theaters, as well as with the RAF (as the Mustang Mk III).
Key Deployment Areas and Uses:
- European Theater (ETO): P-51B/C models were critical for escorting B-17 and B-24 bombers deep into Germany (including Berlin), acting as long-range fighters to counter the Luftwaffe.
- Mediterranean/Italian Theater: Used for escort missions and ground attack roles.
- Pacific Theater: Employed for long-range bomber escort and ground support.
- Ground Attack: The Ninth Air Force and RAF Second Tactical Air Force utilized them as fighter-bombers.
- Reconnaissance: Some were adapted for photographic reconnaissance as F-6C models.
Operators:
- USAAF: 4th, 354th, 357th, and 363rd Fighter Groups were early users of the P-51B/C.
- RAF: Operated as the Mustang Mk III.
- RAAF: Used by No 3 and No 450 Squadrons.
The P-51B was built in Inglewood, California, while the P-51C was produced in Dallas, Texas, with both models featuring the powerful Packard V-1650 Merlin engine that enabled their high-altitude performance.
