The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate ("Gale"), Allied reporting name "Frank," was primarily used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service during the final two years of World War II (1944–1945). It was deployed extensively in the Philippines, China, Burma, and for the defense of the Japanese Home Islands against B-29 bombers.

Key Locations and Operational Use:

  • Philippines: Entered combat during the Battle of Leyte in late 1944, often fighting against American P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts.
  • Japan Home Islands: Served as a critical interceptor against Boeing B-29 Superfortresses, particularly around Tokyo, including units stationed at Chōfu Airfield.
  • China/Burma: Used in these theaters against the USAAF 14th Air Force and other Allied forces.
  • Okinawa: Deployed in 1945 for fighter-bomber strikes against US airfields.

Although it was a formidable, high-performance, and maneuverable fighter capable of matching top Allied planes, its impact was limited by severe shortages of high-octane fuel and pilot inexperience late in the war. The Nakajima Ki-84 was considered the best Japanese fighter to operate in large numbers at the end of the conflict.
