Nakajima Ki27 "NATE"

From $2.52Price

The Nakajima Ki-27 "Nate" was the primary Imperial Japanese Army Air Force fighter (1937–1940), heavily used in the Second Sino-Japanese War, the 1939 Nomonhan incident (Manchuria/Soviet border), and the early Pacific War (1941–1942) across Malaya, Burma, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies. It was later used as a trainer and for Kamikaze missions.

Key Deployment Areas and Operations:

  • China (1938 onwards): Dominated early aerial combat in the Second Sino-Japanese War before encountering more advanced Chinese aircraft.
  • Soviet Border (1939): Extensively used during the Battle of Khalkhin Gol (Nomonhan), initially dominating Soviet Polikarpov fighters.
  • Early Pacific War (1941–1942): Served as the main fighter in the invasions of Malaya, Singapore, Burma, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies.
  • Regional Usage: Also operated by the Manchukuo Air Force and the Royal Thai Air Force.
  • Late-War: As the Nakajima Ki-43 "Hayabusa" replaced it in front-line duty (approx. 1942), remaining Ki-27s were used for training and, in the final months, for kamikaze suicide missions.

Its primary strengths were high maneuverability and a tight turning radius, though it was quickly outclassed by faster, better-armed Allied fighters like the Brewster Buffalo and Curtiss P-40.
