The Nakajima J1N1-S Gekko ("Irving") was a Japanese Imperial Navy night fighter used primarily in the defense of the Japanese home islands against B-29 Superfortresses, as well as in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Philippines, and Indonesia during World War II. It served in night interception, reconnaissance, and as a kamikaze attack aircraft.
Key Locations and Roles:
- Japan Home Islands: Used as a night interceptor against U.S. B-29 bombers, specifically by units like the 302nd Kokutai.
- Rabaul/Solomon Islands: First operational area for the night fighter variant, pioneered by Commander Yasuna Kozono to counter Allied night raids.
