The Mitsubishi F1M “Pete” was a versatile Imperial Japanese Navy floatplane used extensively throughout the Pacific Theater during WWII (1940–1945) for reconnaissance, gunnery spotting, convoy escort, anti-submarine patrol, and, despite its biplane design, as an area-defense fighter.

Key deployment areas and roles included:

  • Key Campaigns: Heavily utilized in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and the Aleutian Islands, as well as supporting early, southern-advance invasions in the Philippines, Malaya, and Indochina.
  • Operational Bases: Operated from seaplane tenders, specialized shore bases (e.g., Rekata Bay), and major warships including battleships Yamato and Nagato.
  • Combat Roles: Engaged in dogfights against Allied fighters (like the F4F Wildcat) and bombers, acted as a dive-bomber, and performed anti-shipping strikes, famously sinking the PT-34 motor torpedo boat in April 1942.
  • Late-War Defense: By 1945, it was used for point defense of the Japanese Home Islands.

The F1M was valued for its high maneuverability, particularly in early, low-intensity air combat, but was largely outclassed by faster Allied aircraft as the war progressed.
