The Mitsubishi A6M5 "Model 52" Zero was primarily used by the Imperial Japanese Navy as a front-line fighter in the Pacific Theater from late 1943 to 1945. Key deployment locations included Rabaul, Saipan, and the Philippine Sea, where it served in air defense, combat, and eventually in Kamikaze roles due to its declining performance against Allied aircraft.
Key Deployment and Usage Areas:
- Rabaul: Served heavily in this crucial base, with many units operating in the defense of this area.
- Saipan: Used by the 261st Kokutai for air defense until U.S. forces captured the airfield in June 1944.
- Philippine Sea: Engaged in the Marianas campaign (the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot"), where many A6M5s were lost.
- Kyushu: Stationed at bases like Kagoshima for the defense of Japan, particularly in 1945.
- Kamikaze Missions: Due to its declining edge against newer American fighters, it was widely used in kamikaze units during the final phases of the war.
Deployment Details:
- Introduction: Entered mass production and service in the fall of 1943.
- Characteristics: It was designed to address the, by then, superior speed of Allied fighters like the F6F Hellcat, offering improved dive speed and thicker armor over previous models.
The A6M5 is considered one of the final, main, combat-operational variants of the Zero, manufactured in large numbers despite being largely outclassed by late-war Allied planes.

Another quality print by FDD. The 3D printing process over the last few years has greatly improved, and some sort of wizardry must be afoot as Dan uses a material that is superb - aways clean, smooth, and no surface prep is ever required. This model of the famous "Zero" was the most produced during the war, so everyone should have some of these quality prints in their collection.
