The Mitsubishi A5M4 "Claude" was primarily used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as their main carrier-based fighter during the Second Sino-Japanese War (starting 1937) and in the initial stages of World War II (1941–1942).
Key deployment areas included:
- Second Sino-Japanese War (China): The A5M dominated air combat over China, escorting G3M bombers and acting as a land-based interceptor.
- Pacific Theater (Early WWII): The "Claude" saw limited action early in the war, including in the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines, and defending the Marshall Islands.
- Carrier Operations: The A5M4 operated from carriers like the Shoho during the Battle of the Coral Sea (1942).
- Late War Roles: After being replaced by the A6M "Zero," remaining A5M4s were used as advanced trainers and in kamikaze missions at the end of the war (1945).
It was considered the world's first carrier-based monoplane fighter to enter service.
