The Dassault Mirage F1 is a French swept-wing, Mach 2+ fighter developed in the 1960s as a smaller, more versatile successor to the Mirage III. First flying in 1966, it was designed for all-weather interception and ground attack, entering French service in 1974 before being retired in 2014. Over 700 units were produced, serving in many conflicts worldwide.
Key Aspects of Mirage F1 History:
- Development & Design: Created as a private venture, the F1 was chosen over the larger F2 due to cost. It featured a conventional swept-wing design rather than the delta wing of its predecessors. The first prototype flew on December 23, 1966.
- Production & Service: Over 700 examples were manufactured between 1966 and 1992. It officially entered service with the French Air Force in 1974.
- Combat Experience: The aircraft saw action in various conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, and operations in Chad and Libya.
- Variants: Major variants included the F1C (interceptor), F1CR (reconnaissance), F1CT (tactical strike), and F1B (two-seat trainer).
- Retirement & Current Use: The French Air Force retired their last Mirage F1s on June 13, 2014. However, it has been used by private contractors for aggressor training, such as by Draken International and ATAC.
