The Messerschmitt Me 309 was never used in operational combat; it was a German prototype fighter developed in 1942-1943 to replace the Bf 109, but it was cancelled after only four prototypes were built. It was tested primarily at Messerschmitt facilities, with prototypes used to test advanced features like pressurized cabins and tricycle landing gear.
- Development & Testing: The Me 309 V1 flew in July 1942, with subsequent prototypes (V2, V3, V4) tested through mid-1943.
- Performance Issues: Trials revealed the Me 309 was not significantly faster or better than the existing Bf 109G, rendering it unnecessary.
- Outcome: The project was scrapped in mid-1943 in favor of the jet-powered Me 262.
