The Messerschmitt Me 262 A-1a Schwalbe was primarily used by the German Luftwaffe as a defensive interceptor against Allied bombers and fighters, with combat operations beginning in July 1944. It was used over German-controlled territory, particularly targeting bombers. Key units, such as EJG 2 and later specialized units like Kommando Nowotny and KG 51, operated them.

  • Vulnerability: Despite its speed, the aircraft was highly vulnerable during takeoff and landing, leading to the establishment of specialized flak units to protect its bases.
  • Post-War: Following the war, the Czechoslovak Air Force operated a small number of these aircraft.
