From $4.36Price

The Messerschmitt Bf-110D, an extended-range "Dackelbauch" variant of the Luftwaffe’s twin-engine heavy fighter, was primarily used from 1940 to 1942 for long-range missions, including convoy escort, anti-shipping, and bomber escort in Norway, the North Sea, the Battle of Britain, and the Mediterranean theater.

Key Deployment Areas and Roles:

  • Norway (1940-1941): Stationed in Norway to operate over the North Sea, providing long-range protection for ships and supporting operations in the far north.
  • Battle of Britain (1940): Deployed for long-range fighter-bomber (Jabo) roles and to escort bombers, though they suffered heavy losses against RAF fighters.
  • Mediterranean & North Africa (1941-1942): Utilized for ground support, escorting Ju 87 Stukas, and protecting shipping lanes, with units operating in Libya and Sicily.
  • Eastern Front (1941-1942): Employed for ground attack in support of Panzer divisions during Operation Barbarossa.
  • Special Operations: A notable example includes a specially modified Bf-110D with extra fuel tanks, famously used by Rudolf Hess in his 1941 flight to Scotland.

The D-series, characterized by increased range through external fuel tanks and an internal belly tank, aimed to fix the range issues of earlier models, eventually transitioning into specialized night fighter roles later in the war.
