The Messerschmitt Me 264 was developed as a long-range strategic bomber for the German Luftwaffe during World War II, specifically designed for the "Amerikabomber" project to strike New York City from France or the Azores. It never saw operational combat usage, as only three prototypes were built and production was halted.
Key details regarding its potential usage:
- Operational Intent: The primary purpose was to deliver bombs to the US East Coast (approx. 7,200 miles round-trip).
- Development Stage: Flight testing occurred on the prototypes, with early, limited development taking place in Regensburg, Germany.
- Roles: Beyond bombing, it was considered for maritime reconnaissance (patrol) for U-boats.
- Fate: Prototypes were destroyed by Allied bombing campaigns before they could be used operationally.
