From $2.52Price

The Messerschmitt Me-163 Komet was used operationally by the German Luftwaffe between July 1944 and May 1945 as a point-defense interceptor. Deployed primarily against Allied bombing raids over Germany, it was based near Leipzig and operated by JG 400. It was the only operational rocket-powered fighter in history.

Key Operational Details:

  • Purpose: Specifically designed to combat Allied strategic bombing, specifically high-flying B-17 Flying Fortresses.
  • Location: Primarily operated in the defense of German airspace during the final stages of World War II.
  • Key Unit: Jagdgeschwader 400 (JG 400) was the main unit equipped with the Komet.
  • Base: The first operational squadron was formed near Leipzig.
  • Operational Constraints: Due to fuel limitations and high risks, its combat role was very limited.

Following the war, some units were brought to the United States for testing at Muroc Dry Lake, California, in 1946.
