The Martin B-26 Marauder was a primary, highly successful medium bomber used extensively by Allied forces in World War II, specifically in the Southwest Pacific (beginning in early 1942), the Mediterranean Theater, and Western Europe. Known for its speed and low-altitude precision bombing, it flew over 110,000 sorties, notably supporting the D-Day invasion and campaigns in Italy and France.

Key Operational Areas and Use Cases:

  • Pacific Theater (1942): First used in the Southwest Pacific; notably, two B-26s were used in a daring, early-war torpedo attack during the Battle of Midway.
  • Mediterranean/North Africa (1942–1945): Operated from North Africa, Sardinia, and Corsica to strike Axis supply lines and support the Italian campaign.
  • Western Europe (1943–1945): Heavily utilized by the US 9th Air Force for tactical bombing in France, the Netherlands, and Germany. It was used by US, British, Free French, South African, and Canadian crews.
  • Specialized Roles: In addition to bombing, some were used as high-speed target tugs (AT-23/JM-1 variants) in Alaska and Hawaii.

Despite initial, high-loss rates at low altitudes (earning it the nickname "Widowmaker"), design improvements (longer wings) and shifting to medium-altitude bombing resulted in it having one of the lowest loss rates of any Allied bomber by 1944.
