The IAI Kfir, an Israeli-built multi-role fighter, was primarily used by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) from 1975 to the 1990s for air superiority and strike missions, notably in Lebanon. It was exported to and operated by the air forces of Colombia, Ecuador, and Sri Lanka. The US Navy and Marine Corps also leased them (as F-21A) for training.
The Kfir was designed as a cost-effective, multi-role fighter, serving as a stopgap between the French Mirage and American F-15/F-16 fighters in Israel.
Key Operational Areas and Roles:
- Israel (IAF): Entered service in 1975; used in strike missions during the 1970s and the 1982 Lebanon War.
- Colombia: Continues to use upgraded Kfir variants in its air force.
- Ecuador: Operated in regional conflicts.
- Sri Lanka: Used extensively against the Tamil Tigers during the civil war.
- United States: Leased by the Navy and Marine Corps (1985–1989) as F-21A "adversary" aircraft for Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT).
