The Kawasaki Ki-48 "Lily" was a primary Imperial Japanese Army Air Force light bomber used extensively across the Pacific Theater and China from 1940 to 1945. It saw service in the early 1940s in China, Burma, Malaya, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies, later acting as a kamikaze weapon in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.

Key Deployment Areas and Roles:

  • China (1940–1945): First utilized in the Second Sino-Japanese War, replacing the Ki-32, where its speed provided early advantages.
  • Southeast Asia & Pacific (1941–1945): Widely used during the initial rapid expansion, including campaigns in Malaya, Burma, the Philippines, and New Guinea.
  • Frontline Service (1940–1944): Used as a light bomber and ground support aircraft, with the improved Ki-48-II variant appearing in 1943 to bolster performance.
  • Final Phase (1945): Due to obsolescence against advanced Allied fighters, many were converted into kamikaze aircraft (Ki-48-II KAI) armed with a 800 kg bomb for attacks around Okinawa.

Although designed as a day bomber, its lack of armor and weak defensive armament forced it into night bombing roles later in the war. It was also used in minor capacities in the Kuril Islands.
