The Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu "NICK" was a twin-engine heavy fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service from 1942 to 1945, primarily serving in the Pacific Theater. It was deployed for bomber interception over Japan, anti-shipping strikes, and ground attack in New Guinea, China, and the Philippines. 

 

Key Deployment Locations and Roles:

  • Japanese Home Islands: Served extensively as a night fighter and interceptor against B-29 Superfortress bombers.
  • New Guinea & Solomon Islands: Operated in ground-attack roles, engaging U.S. Navy PT boats and allied aircraft.
  • China & Philippines: Participated in combat actions, including attacks on Guilin (China) and defense of Manila. 

Operational Functions:

  • Night Fighter: Equipped with oblique-firing upward-mounted cannons to intercept B-29s at night.
  • Anti-Shipping/Ground Attack: Utilized heavy 37mm or 20mm cannons for ship-killing and ground support.
  • B-17 Interceptor: Used in the early war period to counter B-17 bombers due to its heavy armament. 

 

The aircraft was officially known as the "Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter" and was used until the end of World War II.
