The Kawasaki Ki-100-II (an improved, turbocharged variant of the Ki-100-I) was designed for high-altitude interception of B-29 Superfortresses over Japan in 1945, but it did not see operational service. Only three prototypes of the -II variant were completed before the Japanese surrender.
While the improved Ki-100-II did not see combat, the standard Ki-100-Ib (the "Type 5 Fighter") was used in the final months of World War II (starting around March 1945) for home defense.
Deployment of the Ki-100 Series:
- Location: Primarily defended the Japanese home islands, specifically operating from locations such as Chofu and Yokkaichi.
- Role: Used as a high-altitude interceptor against Boeing B-29 Superfortresses and as a dogfighter against US Navy F6F Hellcats and P-51 Mustangs.
- Units: Equipped five Sentai (Army fighter groups) during the final weeks of the war.
- Usage: A notable engagement occurred on July 25, 1945, when Ki-100s engaged F6F Hellcats off the coast of Japan.
Although the Ki-100-II was intended to address high-altitude performance, the war ended before it could be deployed, with production of the entire Ki-100 series cut short by Allied bombing raids.
