The Kawanishi H8K “Emily” flying boat was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service throughout the Pacific Theater during World War II (1942–1945) for long-range maritime patrol, reconnaissance, bombing, and transport missions. Known as the "Type 2 Large Flying Boat," it was used in the second raid on Pearl Harbor (March 1942), attacks on Australia, and as a troop/VIP transport.
Key Operational Areas and Missions:
- Pacific Ocean Theater: Operated extensively for reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime patrol, particularly in the Marshall Islands, Philippines, and surrounding areas.
- Second Raid on Pearl Harbor (March 4, 1942): Two H8K1s conducted an audacious, long-range bombing mission on Oahu, refueling via submarine at French Frigate Shoals.
- Attacks on Australia: Used to bomb towns in Western Australia during 1943 and 1944.
- Andaman Islands: Deployed for patrol in this region by the 851st Kōkūtai.
- Transport Operations: The H8K2-L transport variant (transporting up to 64 troops) was used for moving personnel and cargo in the latter part of the war.
Combat Role and Capabilities:
- Versatility: Served in bombing, maritime reconnaissance, and as a transport.
- Defensive Capability: Renowned for heavy defensive armament (20mm cannons) and rugged construction, often surviving attacks from Allied fighters.
- Operational Units: Flown by the 14th, 801st, 851st, 1001st, 1021st, Takuma, Toko, and Yokohama Naval Air Corps (Kōkūtai).
