The Jaguar GR1 is the initial British single-seat tactical strike and reconnaissance variant of the SEPECAT Jaguar, a supersonic aircraft developed through an Anglo-French collaboration in the 1960s. Entering service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1974, it was designed for high-speed, low-level strike missions and played a pivotal role for the RAF during the Cold War.
Key Technical & Service History
- Operational Roles: Primarily used for close air support and tactical nuclear strike roles, it was once armed with the WE.177 nuclear bomb for potential use against Eastern Bloc targets.
- Combat Record: Most notably served in the 1991 Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm), where Jaguars from the Coltishall Strike Wing destroyed Iraqi artillery and missile positions.
- Upgrades: The GR1 was eventually succeeded by the GR1A, which added improved navigation systems (NAVWASS II), overwing AIM-9 missile pylons, and defensive countermeasures like chaff and flares.
- Retirement: The RAF officially retired the Jaguar in April 2007, two years after the French Air Force retired their fleet. As of 2026, upgraded variants remain in active frontline service only with the Indian Air Force.
