The Chengdu J-7G was primarily used by the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) as an interceptor and air-defense fighter. It entered service around 2003 and was the most advanced version of the J-7 family produced for Chinese service. Its role was to provide local air defense, tactical air superiority, and point defense of important regions and military installations.
The J-7G was deployed with several PLAAF fighter units across China, particularly in regions requiring quick-reaction air-defense coverage. It served alongside newer fighters such as the Chengdu J-10 and Shenyang J-11 until its retirement. The type was officially phased out of frontline PLAAF service by 2023 as China transitioned to an all fourth- and fifth-generation fighter force.
 
Outside China, the specific J-7G variant was also exported to:
Tanzania – 12 J-7Gs delivered beginning in 2011.
Sri Lanka – Operated F-7G export variants primarily as interceptors.
In Chinese service, the J-7G's main missions were:
Air defense interception
Quick reaction alert (QRA)
Tactical air superiority
Pilot training and operational conversion in some units
 
The aircraft was recognizable by its distinctive double-delta wing inherited from the J-7E and improved radar and avionics compared to earlier J-7 variants.
