J-10A Chengdu Air Superiority

The Chengdu J-10A "Vigorous Dragon" was primarily operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). It entered service in the early 2000s and equipped several frontline fighter divisions and brigades across China. The J-10A was China's first widely deployed indigenous fourth-generation multirole fighter and was used for:
- Air defense and interception missions
- Air superiority operations
- Ground attack and strike missions
- Pilot training and operational conversion
- National airspace patrols and quick-reaction alert duties
The J-10A was based at numerous PLAAF airfields throughout China, including units in:
- Eastern China (opposite Taiwan)
- Southern China (South China Sea region)
- Northern China (Beijing and Bohai Gulf defense)
- Western China (Xinjiang region)
Unlike later J-10C/CE variants, the J-10A was not exported and remained exclusively in Chinese service. Pakistan's aircraft are the newer J-10CE export variant, not the earlier J-10A.
Known PLAAF operators of the J-10A included:
- 1st Fighter Division
- 44th Fighter Division
- 3rd Fighter Division
- 131st Air Brigade
- 2 August 1st Aerobatic Team (used specially modified J-10AY/J-10SY aircraft)
As newer J-10B and J-10C variants entered service, many J-10A aircraft were upgraded or reassigned, but they continue to serve in secondary frontline and training roles within the PLAAF.
