The Airspeed Horsa assault glider was a British troop-carrying glider used extensively during World War II for air assault operations, most notably during the invasion of Sicily (1943), the D-Day landings in Normandy (1944), Operation Market Garden, and the Rhine Crossing (1945). It was used to deliver troops and heavy equipment directly behind enemy lines.
Key Operations:
- Operation Freshman (1942): An unsuccessful attempt in Norway.
- Operation Husky (1943): The Allied invasion of Sicily.
- Operation Tonga/D-Day (1944): Normandy landings, famously including the capture of Pegasus Bridge.
- Operation Dragoon (1944): The invasion of Southern France.
- Operation Market Garden (1944): The battle for Arnhem in the Netherlands.
- Operation Varsity (1945): The Rhine River crossing into Germany.
The Horsa was designed to carry up to 30 fully equipped troops or equipment like jeeps and anti-tank guns, manufactured primarily from wood to save metal, and towed by aircraft such as the C-47 Dakota, Stirling, or Halifax.
