Heinkel He170 Light Bomber
From $4.58Price
The Heinkel He 170 was primarily used as a fast reconnaissance aircraft by the Royal Hungarian Air Force (RHAF) between 1937 and 1942, with roughly 18–20 aircraft delivered. These Hungarian-modified, radial-engine versions of the Heinkel He 70 saw action on the Eastern Front against Soviet forces in 1941.
Key Usage and Details:
- Operational Service: Hungary used the 18-20 He 170A planes in reconnaissance roles over Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union in 1941.
- Withdrawal: Due to light armament, vulnerability to enemy aircraft, and fires caused by the Magnesium alloy "Elektron" airframe, they were withdrawn from front-line service in 1942.
- Modifications: The He 170 was a specifically designed export variant for Hungary (often called He 70K), featuring a license-built Gnome-Rhône Mistral Major radial engine (WM-K-14), which increased speed to 435 km/h.
- Replacement: The fleet was replaced by obsolete Heinkel He 46s before Focke-Wulf Fw 189s became available.
Although sometimes confused with the He 70, the He 170 was a distinct export variant. The standard He 70 saw earlier service with the German Luftwaffe and in the Spanish Civil War.
