The Heinkel He 60 was a German twin-float biplane reconnaissance seaplane mainly used by the Kriegsmarine as a shipboard catapult aircraft for cruisers and battleships starting in 1934. It was heavily employed for coastal patrols in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas, by Spanish Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War, and was retired from front-line duties by 1943.
Key Operational Details:
- Kriegsmarine (1933–1943): Initial units were used for training in 1933, before becoming the primary catapult-launched reconnaissance plane for German cruisers (e.g., Königsberg, Leipzig, Nürnberg) and battleships (e.g., Admiral Graf Spee, Admiral Scheer).
- Spanish Civil War: Used by Nationalist forces for coastal monitoring, based in Cadiz, Ceuta, Melilla, and later Mallorca.
It was considered rugged but underpowered, serving as a critical, albeit transitional, maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
