The Heinkel He-219 Uhu ("Eagle Owl") was used by the German Luftwaffe as a premier night fighter during the final stages of World War II, primarily defending the German Reich against British RAF bombing raids. It was operated by specialized units such as Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 (NJG 1) from bases in the Netherlands and Germany, and later by units in Denmark.
Key Operational Details:
- Operational Debut: The first live interception mission occurred on the night of June 11–12, 1943, by Major Werner Streib of NJG 1, based in Venlo, Netherlands.
- Primary Locations: Served mainly over German-occupied Europe and Germany to counter Allied night bombers. Key locations included Venlo (Netherlands), and by 1945, units were operating in Denmark and Germany (e.g., Sylt, Münster-Handorf).
- Role & Function: It was a high-performance night fighter equipped with advanced Lichtenstein SN-2 radar. Despite its effectiveness against RAF bombers, only 294 were built, limiting its overall impact on the war.
The aircraft was notably the first operational military plane equipped with ejection seats.
