The Henschel Hs 123 was a German single-seat biplane used by the Luftwaffe as a close-support dive bomber during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and early-to-mid World War II. It saw active service in Poland (1939), France (1940), the Balkans, and extensively on the Eastern Front (until 1944).
Key Operational Areas :
- Spanish Civil War: The Condor Legion used them for ground attack starting in 1936.
- European Blitzkrieg (1939-1940): Used during the invasion of Poland, and campaigns in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
- Eastern Front (1941-1944): Despite being considered obsolete, its ruggedness made it highly effective in Russia, serving with Schlachtgeschwader 1 (SchlG 1) and II. Gruppe of Schlachtgeschwader 2.
- Other Theaters: Exported to China for use against Japanese warships, and used in training units.
The aircraft was officially withdrawn in 1944, though some remained operational until the final stages of the war.
