The Grumman EA-6B Prowler was a carrier-based and land-based electronic warfare aircraft used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from 1971 to 2019. It served in nearly every major U.S. combat operation, including the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Kosovo, Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom), Iraq (Operation Inherent Resolve), and Syria, primarily for jamming enemy radar and communications.

Key Deployment Locations and Operations:

  • Vietnam War: The EA-6B entered service in 1971, providing critical electronic countermeasures in a high-threat environment.
  • Operation Desert Storm (1991): Used extensively to protect allied aircraft from radar and air defenses.
  • Bosnia and Kosovo (1990s): Supported NATO operations over Yugoslavia.
  • Iraq and Afghanistan (2000s–2010s): Deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve, aiding in jamming radio-controlled bombs and supporting airstrikes.
  • Syria (2016): Marine Corps Prowlers operated from Turkey in support of missions against Islamic State militants.

Operational Context:

  • Platforms: Operated from U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and forward land bases, often by USMC tactical electronic warfare squadrons (VMAQ).
  • Role: Specialized in the suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) by using the ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System and firing AGM-88 HARM missiles.
  • Retirement: Replaced by the Boeing EA-18G Growler in the Navy by 2015, with the Marines retiring their last aircraft in 2019.
