The Gotha Go 242 assault glider was primarily used by the German Luftwaffe during World War II for transport and supply missions in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and on the Eastern Front. It was heavily deployed from 1942–1943 for moving troops, vehicles, and supplies to remote garrisons.
Key details regarding its usage include:
- Operational Areas: Main theaters included North Africa, Greece, Crete, and the Soviet Union.
- Deployment: Commonly towed by Heinkel He 111, Junkers Ju 52, or Messerschmitt Bf 110 aircraft.
- Function: Used for transporting 20–23 fully equipped soldiers, ammunition, or light vehicles.
- Powered Version: The motorized variant, the Gotha Go 244, was used in Crete and North Africa.
- Replacement: Due to vulnerability to enemy fire, it was eventually phased out in favor of powered transport aircraft.
