The Gloster Meteor F.8 was the final and most produced single-seat fighter variant of the Gloster Meteor, the first operational jet aircraft used by the Allied forces. Introduced in August 1949, it served as the backbone of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) Fighter Command until the mid-1950s.
Technical Specifications
The F.8 featured a redesigned tail and a lengthened fuselage compared to earlier models to improve aerodynamic stability at high speeds.
- Powerplant: Two Rolls-Royce Derwent 8 centrifugal flow turbojet engines, each providing 3,500 lbf (15.6 kN) of thrust.
- Performance: According to BAE Systems, it reached a maximum speed of 598 mph and had a range of approximately 600 miles.
- Armament: Standard armament consisted of four nose-mounted 20mm Hispano Mk V cannons. It could also carry sixteen 60 lb rockets or two 1,000 lb bombs for ground-attack missions.
- Safety Features: It was the first Meteor variant to be fitted with a Martin-Baker ejection seat as standard equipment.
Operational History
While the RAF primarily used the F.8 for home defense, the aircraft saw significant combat with international operators.
- Korean War: Flown by No. 77 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), the Meteor F.8 engaged North Korean MiG-15 jets. Although outclassed in high-altitude dogfights by the swept-wing MiGs, it proved highly effective in the ground-attack role.
- Export and Production: Over 1,500 units were produced, with many built under license by Fokker in the Netherlands. It was also operated by nations including Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Egypt, Israel, and Syria.
