The Fiat-Aeritalia G.91-R3 (Luftwaffe Variant) was primarily used by West Germany during the Cold War, and later deployed in combat by Portugal during the Portuguese Colonial War in Africa. The G.91-R3 was the specific version optimized for West Germany's defense requirements. It entered official service in 1962.
Role: Used as a tactical ground-attack, close air support (CAS), and reconnaissance aircraft.
Geography: Deployed heavily at airfields across West Germany (such as Oberpfaffenhofen Airfield) to guard NATO's frontline against the Warsaw Pact.
Armament Twist: Unlike the Italian variant which used four machine guns, the German R3 variant was fitted with two heavier 30mm DEFA cannons to meet Luftwaffe specifications.
Retirement: The Luftwaffe phased out the variant in the early 1980s, replacing it with the Alpha Jet.
Portugal: Starting in 1965, Portugal acquired surplus and second-hand G.91 aircraft from West Germany, including R3 variants that supplemented their fleet over the years.
Role: Active combat close air support, dropping bombs and napalm against guerrilla movements.
Geography: Unlike Germany's defensive positioning, Portugal used these jets in active overseas combat theaters within its former African colonies.
Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) Mozambique & Angola.
Retirement: Following the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the surviving planes were returned to mainland Portugal (stationed at bases like Montijo Air Base), where they continued to serve until their final retirement in 1993.
