The F9F-5 Panther was used extensively by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during the Korean War (1950–1953) as a primary carrier-based ground-attack and fighter aircraft. It operated from straight-deck aircraft carriers and was known for its durability in combat, with 725 of this specific variant produced.

- Key Combat Action: On November 18, 1952, Lt. Elmer Royce Williams, flying an F9F-5, famously shot down four Soviet-flown MiG-15s in a single action.
